Author, producer, and spoken word poet Caleb “The Negro Artist” Rainey, will perform poetry that addresses race relations with honesty and vulnerability. Caleb has released two books of African American poetry and was featured on Iowa Public Radio. He is the co-founder of the literary magazine Black Art and writes a monthly column for The Real Mainstream. He has done spoken word across the nation and has even performed in London, England. His work will focus on race relations in the U.S., using his poems as pieces that tackle the injustices and hardships, beauty and nuances, of being Black in America. Join us for an introduction to the basics of vermicomposting. Vermicomposting is an excellent way to divert landfill waste and compost your biodegradable kitchen scraps. This decomposition process, utilizing a species of worms called red wigglers, is easy to do, produces great compost for your garden, and can be done inside year-round (it won’t stink!). You’ll take away a better understanding of how to accomplish this at home and some worms of your own! This is an in-person program. Space is limited. Spend the evening with your special someone at Hitchcock Nature Center during Lovebirds in Nature. Start the evening with a guided snowshoe stroll or winter hike through the snowy hills of Hitchcock, and watch the sunset. Barenaked Ladies are bringing Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket to Harrah's Stir Cove for their Last Summer On Earth Tour. This will be the 6th edition of the tour, founded by the band in 2012 – the year that the Mayan calendar predicted would be the last, hence the “Last Summer On Earth”. Don't miss a summer night of good times and great music.
Join us in the fight against veteran suicide at our 3rd Annual Poker Run. Registration will open from 10 a.m until 12 p.m. at Edward's Motorsports & RV. Food and drinks will be served by The Dock Bar & Grill. Register with us, get your route maps, and then grab breakfast before heading out. The Dock will have breakfast burritos available. The route will be announced in 2021. Our ride will once again end at Full Fledged Brewing Co. for a street party. There will be a silent and live auction, food truck, and a live band. We will have a suggested donation of $20 for single riders or car drivers, and $35 for couples or carloads. All donations will be collected at registration. More details to come in 2021.
