Wild Wanderers Camp at Arrowhead Park

Students entering 5th & 6th grade (age 10 to 11) will make some waves as they continue to expand their outdoor knowledge during Wild Wanderers at Arrowhead Park. Campers will continue growing their outdoor survival skills through continued archery lessons, canoeing, advanced shelter building, and more of the most iconic summer camp games during this hands-on camp. The camp will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. July 27th through 29th. The cost for this three-day camp is $75.00 per camper and includes park admission, snacks, and camp materials. Goat Yoga at Ditmars Orchard

Half Moon Yoga and Ditmars Orchard & Vineyard are partnering to bring you this unique and memorable experience with the goats that live at the Orchard! Don't be scared off if you have never done yoga...this will be about 30% yoga, 70% goat cuddles, and laughter! Be prepared to have goats snuggle beside you, nibble on your hair, climb on your back, poop near you, make cute sounds, and above all else, melt your heart. And of course, spend time in nature appreciating the beauty and scenery of Ditmars Orchard.

Carrie, from Half Moon Yoga, will be leading a 45 min yoga sequence that will be safe and fun for everyone! Cost: $30/ person. Please bring a yoga mat, blanket, or towel to lay on the ground. Also, bring a water bottle and wear clothes you can get dirty. Space is very limited, so sign up soon! Tickets are non-refundable and must be paid ahead of time.

Westfair 2021

Westfair Fairgrounds · Council Bluffs

Westfair 2021 is just around the corner! Come join us at the largest and oldest on record (1861) county fair in Southwest Iowa. There will be free parking and free admission to the main part of the fair, and we are always seeking sponsorships to help defray the costs of putting on the fair. At the heart of Westfair are the 4-H and FFA exhibits featuring livestock shows, static exhibits, presentations, apple pie auction, etc. The Queen Contest will be held in the Showring Wednesday evening. Sunday at noon, the Best of the Southwest Shootout, where Grand Champions in all livestock species from 11 counties vie for supreme SW IA district champion. 

Free daily entertainment Thursday through Sunday on the lawn: Tumbleweed Crossing Wild West Gunfight Show and the Kevin Barnes Magic Show will highlight the greenspace in 2021.

Taco Ride

The Taco Ride takes place every Thursday evening on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mineola, Iowa, and back. The scenic ride is about 20 miles through the Loess Hills and ends with dinner at Tobey Jack's Mineola Steakhouse. The weekly rides take place from when the trail is dry enough in the spring (usually in April or May) until late in the fall (usually until Halloween).

Most riders start at Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park where parking is available. Slightly more than halfway between the trailhead and Tobey Jack's, many riders will stop at a picnic area, nicknamed Margaritaville, for a quick break and to join in a conversation with fellow bikers or to partake in refreshments they brought with them.

Pottawattamie Conservation Speaker Series ~ Magical Time on Nebraska's "Crane River"

Each year a world-class spectacle graces the heartland of Central Nebraska. Over 500,000 lesser sandhill cranes spend 4-6 weeks along the Platte River during their spring migration. Join Ron Cisar as he explores the biology and ecology of this ancient bird that has been a part of our Midwestern fauna for thousands of years.

Black Squirrel Triathlon

Think you have what it takes? Come join us and find out by registering for the Black Squirrel Triathlon! The race is open to ages 18 & older, both individuals and teams! Proceeds will benefit Council Bluffs, Parks, Recreation and Public Property, Council Bluffs YMCA, and Iowa Department of Natural Resources-Lake Manawa.

Swimmers take to the water at Lake Manawa for the first leg (750 yd swim) of the Black Squirrel Triathlon. Bikers will start at Lake Manawa State Park Beach and bike around the lake 2 times for a total of 13 miles. The Black Squirrel Triathlon will conclude with a 3.1-mile run on City trails (1.55 out and 1.55 back to the finish line). All participants will receive a finisher medal! Awards for the Top 3 overall males and females ages 15 and above.  Top 3 individuals in each 5 year USA Triathlon Age Group on both male and females.  Awards also for the top 3 relay teams.   Top overall award for the "SwimRun" and "Aquabike" for both male and female.

Save the date for a Symposium to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Latter-day Saint Exodus across Iowa, the founding of Kanesville (forerunner of Council Bluffs), and the granting of Iowa statehood - all in 1846. This event will be a two-track Symposium featuring Latter-day Saint (Mormon) scholars, local historians, overland trail experts, archeologists, geographers, and many more! Butterflies Through Binoculars

This program will be taught by butterfly enthusiast Jason Andersen, Wildlife Biologist with Pheasants Forever. It begins with an informative classroom presentation on what species are currently active, how to identify them, and helpful tips on the habitats in which various species can be found. Then, we embark on an adventure out into the Loess Hills to find our local butterflies! Please bring binoculars if you have them; we will also have some pairs of close focus insect binoculars to check out on a first-come, first-served basis. 3rd Annual Poker Run - A Ride to Prevent Veteran Suicide

Join us in the fight against veteran suicide at our 3rd Annual Poker Run. Registration will open from 10 a.m until 12 p.m. at Edward's Motorsports & RV. Hitchcock Oak Inventory Project Training

The sprawling mighty oak tree remains a symbol of the American Midwest but a new, swift, and little understood disease has recently emerged in our area with the potential to eliminate these iconic trees from our landscape. Join us for the final training session for a volunteer project aimed at understanding and alleviating the effects of this new threat. Training sessions will cover a variety of topics and includes field training sessions to help volunteers practice their skills and become independent project volunteers. Topics covered will include the project and field data collection app, oak ecology, and oak fire wounds. Portions of the training will occur out of doors and off-trail, so please dress appropriately. Gardening for Diversity - A Hands-On Workshop

The great outdoors begins in your own backyard. Join us for our new programming series "Gardening for Diversity". Our fifth program session will be held on Saturday, October 16th at 1:00 p.m. at Narrows River Park. Participants at this session will evaluate the progress of our native planting, learn about seed harvesting and storage, and learn the important steps that should be taken to successfully put your native planting bed to sleep for winter. Gardening for Diversity is a 6 part programming series that will walk participants through creating their own diverse native gardens through a mix of classroom learning and hands-on gardening exercises. Each session will cover different aspects of native gardening, from planning to planting to maintaining, and is perfect for beginning gardeners and anyone who is looking for new ways to incorporate native plantings in their own garden. Taco Ride

to 11:00PM | Wabash Trace Nature Trail · Council Bluffs

The Taco Ride takes place every Thursday evening on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mineola, Iowa, and back. The scenic ride is about 20 miles through the Loess Hills and ends with dinner at Tobey Jack's Mineola Steakhouse. The weekly rides take place from when the trail is dry enough in the spring (usually in April or May) until late in the fall (usually until Halloween).

Women's Fund of Southwest Iowa - Impact for Women Summit

The IMPACT for Women Summit on October 28, is the inaugural event for the Women's Fund of Southwest Iowa. This half-day event is packed with dynamic conversations geared toward sharing knowledge and building community to support women in our region. The morning discussion is focused on women in the workforce and the most relevant work happening from a statewide perspective with Debi Durham, Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Also scheduled are two fast-moving conversations -- one regarding childcare as a driver of economic development featuring Dawn Oliver Wiand, executive director of the Iowa Women's Foundation, and the other on opportunities and challenges around aging in place in rural communities with Lakelyn Hogan, Gerontologist and Caregiver Advocate with Home Instead Senior Care. The summit culminates with Elizabeth Smart, the renowned author and nationally recognized advocate for change related to child abduction, recovery programs, and national legislation.

This is a hybrid event with online and in-person (Ameristar Casino Hotel) options available.

Gardening for Diversity - A Hands-On Workshop

The great outdoors begins in your own backyard. Join us for our new programming series "Gardening for Diversity". Our sixth and final program will be held on Saturday, November 6th at 1:00 p.m. at Narrows River Park. Participants at this session will cover fall seeding techniques for spring success along with coverage of brome and tall fescue grasses. Gardening for Diversity is a 6 part programming series that will walk participants through creating their own diverse native gardens through a mix of classroom learning and hands-on gardening exercises. Each session will cover different aspects of native gardening, from planning to planting to maintaining, and is perfect for beginning gardeners and anyone who is looking for new ways to incorporate native plantings in your own garden. Cost is $15.00 per person per session. Registration is required as space is limited.

This program will be held entirely online and is perfect for anyone with an interest in conservation and a desire to develop a better understanding of the natural world outside their own front door. Our November program participants will explore the process of nature's annual decomposition and the organisms responsible for breaking down organic matter.

MAGE: Mid-America Gamers Expo

Mid-America Center · Council Bluffs

The inaugural MAGE (Mid-America Gamers Expo) will take place in Council Bluffs in November! Powered by the Iowa West Foundation, this unique multi-tiered, three-day esports festival will be held at the Mid-America Center and will feature three main components. 

  • A Gamers Expo showcasing local and national sponsors and vendors who provide services and peripherals for gamers.
  • A 26-hour LAN (local area network) Party with hundreds of gamers simultaneously playing multiplayer games across a private connection.
  • A Tournament of Champions featuring high school, college, and independent teams playing two different games for thousands of dollars in cash and prizes! 

Friday, November 19 from 4 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Saturday, November 20 from 10 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Sunday, November 21 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
